Taiwan has endured substantial structural harm following the seismic episode that reverberated through its eastern region. Approximately 97 edifices have incurred damage, with a significant portion concentrated in Hualien County, proximal to the epicenter. Reports from local authorities indicate that four structures within the county have undergone partial collapse. Among them, the Uranus Building, a nine-storey structure, tilts to the right following the collapse of its ground floor. While rescue operations have successfully extricated twenty-two individuals from this precarious situation, efforts persist to locate and aid one remaining resident.
A seismic event of remarkable potency has struck Taiwan, constituting the most forceful tremor witnessed by the island in a quarter-century. Occurring at 7:58 a.m. local time, the earthquake originated 18 kilometers south of Hualien, reaching a depth of 34.8 kilometers. Consequences of this seismic event include a casualty toll of at least four, alongside 57 reported injuries.
Hualien County, particularly ravaged, bears the brunt of structural devastation, with numerous buildings succumbing to collapse and entrapment scenarios. The aviation sector responded promptly to these warnings, suspending flights temporarily, which were eventually resumed. Nevertheless, power outages have afflicted over 91,000 households, as reported by Taiwan’s Central Emergency Command Center.
Subsequent to the seismic episode, pronounced aftershocks ensued, reverberating throughout the island, including its capital, Taipei. Forecasts anticipate tremors of up to magnitude 7 in the ensuing days.
